Family Life

The Family Group is the core group at the Gathering. It is the primary place for learning, sharing, growing, and fellowship before, during, and after the five-day onsite experience. Family groups are made of a small number of youth connected directly to an adult leader.

WE BELIEVE will bring LCMS youth and adults together for five days of massive group activities, but it is the experience within the Family Group that forms the core of the Gathering experience.

Family Group time provides youth the opportunity to talk things through in a close setting and make new discoveries about life in Christ and life in the Church.

The Gathering provides resources and training to assist groups in experiencing the Gathering. The faithful commitment of you, the adult leader, working intentionally with teens in the context of family groups helps teens carry deeper learning away from the event.

Navigating Bourbon Street
As you enter New Orleans you will find that not only do we have an amazing story to share about our living God and what WE BELIEVE, but this city has a story to tell us as well. It has a rich history and people who have a deep faith in God. Use this resource to help your youth learn more about the city and how you can deal with questions regarding Bourbon Street.

Participant Commissioning Service
As your group prepares for the Gathering, consider using this commissioning as part of a worship service, a special service, or another congregational setting.

The Pre-Gathering Family Group Bible Study
The Gathering Spiritual Life Team has written a three-part study based on theGospel of John to explore what WE BELIEVE by looking at who Jesus is and what He does and at who His message is for. Use this three-part study with your Family Group as you prepare your hearts and minds to encounter the WE BELIEVE theme at the Gathering this summer.

These three Bible studies provide the context for what WE BELIEVEand prepare participants for the on-site daily Bible study in their track and Family Group.

LEADER'S GUIDE

To say "WE BELIEVE" begs the question: Just what exactly do "WE BELIEVE"? We cannot take the "what" of our faith for granted. What WE BELIEVE matters, because it matters to Jesus; whatever WE BELIEVE will result in either life or death. In this study, we spend some time examining Jesus' identity (who He is) and His performance (what He does).

This study gets more specific about who Jesus is and what He does. John records a number of personal exchanges between Jesus and individuals like Nicodemus, the Samaritan woman, the blind man, and others. We will use courtroom language such as "testimony," "evidence," and "verdict" to see what Jesus said and did, why people believed in Him, and how they responded in faith.

Study Three: WHOEVER, PART THREE

LEADER'S GUIDE

The "whatever" of the previous studies refers to Jesus--to His identity and His performance. The "whoever" of this story refers to who Jesus' message is for--everyone! The whole reason Jesus came to this earth was so that everyone would believe in Him and have life.

The Lagniappe:

In New Orleans getting a little something extra — extra pickles on a po’boy or extra remoulade sauce with an order of shrimp, for example — is called lagniappe.

For the 2010 National LCMS Youth Gathering The Lagniappe strives to give some extra information, a few more tips, and a little more encouragement for the Family Group Adult Leaders (FGALs). You’ll meet Boudreaux, who is ready to give advice, and Officer Thibodeaux who has safety tips to share. The Lagniappe will be distributed to FGALs daily at the morning hotel meetings, with other editions being published prior to the Gathering.

Look for The Lagniappe to cover a variety of topics including daily schedule notes, tips for navigating the city, suggestions for leading a group through the Gathering, and previews of Gathering events. Start each day with The Lagniappe. You’ll be glad you did!

Outreach at the Gathering
Do your youth have friends who don't have a church home or who aren't sure what they believe? We encourage you to reach out to those youth by inviting them to come to the Gathering. The following resource offers some tips and suggestions on how to make include these youth in your Gathering planning.

Songs for Worshiping Together
Spending time in worship, God’s Word, prayer, and song can strengthen the bonds you have started with your Family Group. We will be singing many familiar hymns, songs from previous Gatherings, and some songs and hymns that may also be new to you. We will continue to list songs that you might hear at the Gathering here.
